Pain Considerations

Pain is often the chief complaint for the patient and it is experience differently by everyone. It is important to identify what type(s) of pain a patient is suffering from in order to create an effective care plan or product recommendation. Cannabis can be highly beneficial for addressing illness or injury which cause both physical and emotional distress simultaneously.

Pain: Physical, mental, or emotional suffering or discomfort caused by illness or injury.

Acute Pain: Usually comes on suddenly and is caused by something known and/or specific. Typically resolves within 3 – 6 months. Examples: broken bone, soft tissue injury, muscular injury, surgery, etc.

Chronic pain: Persisting or ongoing pain lasting more than 3 months. Source of pain can be known or unknown. Long term chronic or severe pain causes tremendous stress to the body and can lead to additional problems like muscular tension, limited mobility, low energy, lack of appetite, depression, anxiety, etc. If left unresolved the patient can experience severe, compounding physical and emotional trauma. Examples: Arthritis, cancer, back pain, migraines, fibromyalgia, etc.

Breakthrough Pain: Sudden pain experienced as a result of an activity or in between scheduled pain medication(s).
